Cape Shores
Cape Shores is an upscale community located on Lewes Beach. Home to over 200 beautiful homes with a 3,300' shoreline, private fishing pier, community pool, clubhouse, tennis courts, and borders the Cape Henlopen State Park. But Cape Shores hasn't always been the prominent community it is now.
Cape Shores was built on the site of the Fish Products Plant. 62 acres that were used to bring in enormous catches of menhaden. The fishery slowed in the early 1960s and eventually the plant closed.
Then, in the late 1970s, it was purchased by Fischer Enterprises of Milford. The company used the site for storage. In the early 1980s, the land -- zoned for heavy industry -- was proposed as a coal port. City officials rejected that plan. Fischer Enterprises ultimately proposed the Cape Shores housing development.
In the early 1990's, planning began for the Cape Shores community.
